Solapur

History of Solapur

Solapur has a remarkable history and is popularly known as the “City of Hutatmas”. A Hutatma refers to a freedom fighter who lost their life while fighting against British rule.

The Four Hutatmas of Solapur

Solapur is associated with four prominent freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives during the struggle for India's independence:

  • Shri Mallappa Dhanshetti
  • Shri Kurban Hussain
  • Shri Jagannath Shinde
  • Shri Kisan Sarda

Solapur's Role in the Freedom Movement

Solapur holds a unique place in Indian history because its citizens experienced a brief period of freedom even before India's independence. From 9 to 11 May 1930, Solapur effectively remained free from British control.

After the arrest of Mahatma Gandhi in May 1930, protests and demonstrations against British rule took place across India. Large-scale protests were also organized in Solapur. Many citizens lost their lives in police firing, which led to an angry crowd attacking police stations.

Fearing the situation, police officers and other government officials left Solapur. For three days, the citizens of Solapur experienced a period of self-rule.

National Flag at Solapur Municipal Council

Solapur Municipal Council holds the distinction of being the first municipal council in India where the National Flag was hoisted on its municipal building in 1930.

Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's Dandi March, the freedom fighters of Solapur decided to hoist the National Flag at the Municipal Council building. On 6 April 1930, prominent freedom fighter Shri Annasaheb Bhopatkar of Pune hoisted the National Flag over the municipal building.

The British authorities reacted strongly and declared martial law in Solapur. Many leaders and citizens were arrested on various charges.

The Four Freedom Fighters

Shri Mallappa Dhanshetti, Shri Kurban Hussain, Shri Jagannath Shinde and Shri Kisan Sarda were arrested in connection with the killing of two policemen from Mangalwar Police Station.

They were sentenced to death and were hanged on 12 January 1931 at the Yerwada Prison in Pune. Their sacrifice gave Solapur the enduring identity of the “City of Hutatmas”.
