History of Mount Abu:

The history of Mount Abu is wrapped in legends. According to one legend, Mount Abu derives its name from Mount Abu, when the youngest son of the Himalayas, with the help of a serpent called Arbud, flooded the gorge in the area with water to save the revered bull of Shiva.

In more contemporary history, Mount Abu was once under the rule of the Chauhan dynasty and later served as a summer residence for royalty. The British also favoured this region and made it their retreat from the heat and dust of Rajasthan.

In the Puranas, the region has been referred to as Arbudaranya (“forest of Arbhu”), and “Abu” is considered a diminutive of this ancient name. It is believed that the sage Vasistha retired to the southern spur of Mount Abu after his differences with the sage Vishvamitra.
