History of Mahe

The region was originally known as “Mayyazhi”, a name meaning “the mouth of the Black River”. Mahe has a history of approximately two and a half centuries, closely associated with the French presence on the Malabar Coast.

The first representative of the French East India Company, Mr. Mollandin, arrived in Mahe in 1721. On 2 April 1721, Mollandin and Vazhunnavar, the ruler of Badagara, reached an agreement allowing the French to establish a trading centre and construct a warehouse at the mouth of the Mahe River.

In 1724, the French built a fort in the region. However, the British persuaded the Prince of Badagara to drive the French out of Mahe in 1725. Relations between the French and Vazhunnavar became tense, forcing the French to temporarily withdraw to Calicut. In December 1725, the French recaptured Mahe.

Origin of the Name Mahe

Captain François Mahe de Labourdonnais played an important role in the recapture of Mahe. In recognition of his distinguished services, the French settlement on the Malabar Coast was named “Mahe” after him.

The original name “Mayyazhi” gradually evolved into “Mahe”. In Malayalam, Mahe is now pronounced as “Mahi”.

The Historical Connection Between Mahe and Pondicherry

Mahe shares a historical connection with Pondicherry because of the French administration. A street named Rue Mahe de Labourdonnais still exists in Pondicherry, between Marie Hall and the War Memorial.

This connection reflects the historical relationship between the French captain François Mahe de Labourdonnais and the small French enclave of Mahe on the western coast of India.
