About Salem

Salem is a historic city and an important regional centre. Its original name was associated with “Chemeketa”, a term interpreted as meaning “a place of meeting or rest”. The city is located in the central part of the Willamette Valley and has played an important role in the region's administration, agriculture and commercial activities.

Salem is also the county seat of Marion County and serves as an important centre of state government. The presence of numerous government agencies has contributed significantly to the development of the city.

History of Salem

In 1840–1841, Jason Lee's mission was relocated from the Willamette River to a site along Mill Creek. In 1842, the missionaries established the Oregon Institute.

When the mission was dissolved in 1844, plans were made to establish a settlement on the institute's land. The name “Salem” was chosen later and corresponds to the English form of the Hebrew word “Shalom”, associated with the meaning of peace.

The location of Oregon's capital was the subject of a prolonged dispute. In 1851, the provisional government moved the capital from Oregon City to Salem. In 1855, it was temporarily moved to Corvallis and returned to Salem later that same year.

The proximity of the state government has enabled the citizens of Salem to participate actively in decision-making processes and various community development initiatives.
