History of Allahabad

Allahabad, officially known today as Prayagraj, is one of the most historic cities in Uttar Pradesh. It stands at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati, known as the Triveni Sangam. The site holds immense religious and cultural importance for Hindus.

Anciently known as Prayag, the city is mentioned in the Puranas, Ramayana and Mahabharata. According to Hindu tradition, Lord Brahma performed an important yajna here and Prayag came to be known as Tirth Raj, the "King of Pilgrimage Centres".

Allahabad in Ancient Times

The region of Prayag was associated with several ancient kingdoms and historical figures. The area near Jhunsi was connected with the kingdom of King Pururava of the Lunar dynasty. Nearby Kaushambi also flourished during the Vatsa and Mauryan periods.

One of the city's important historical monuments is the Ashoka Pillar, which contains inscriptions associated with Emperor Ashoka and later King Samudragupta.

The Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang visited Prayag in 643 AD and described it as an important sacred centre inhabited by many Hindus.

Allahabad under the Mughal Empire

In 1575, Mughal Emperor Akbar founded the city under the name Illahabas, recognising the strategic importance of the Sangam. During the medieval period, the city became an important religious and cultural centre and served for a period as a provincial capital of the Mughal Empire.

Allahabad under British Rule

In 1801, the Nawab of Oudh ceded the city to the British. The Allahabad Fort was subsequently used for military purposes.

During the Revolt of 1857, Allahabad played an important role in the struggle against British rule. In 1858, the city became the site where power was officially transferred from the East India Company to the British Government.

Climate of Allahabad

Allahabad has a climate typical of the northern Indian plains. Summers are very hot, while winters can be quite cold. Its proximity to the Himalayan region also contributes to cold winds during the winter months.

The winter period, approximately from October to March, is generally more comfortable for exploring the city.

By Air

Prayagraj is now served by Prayagraj Airport. The city can also be reached through nearby airports such as Varanasi and Lucknow.

By Train

Allahabad is well connected by railway with major cities including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Lucknow, Kanpur and Varanasi.

By Road

The city is connected by road with different parts of Uttar Pradesh and other regions of India through major national highways.
